Let’s say you’re an affiliate marketer, and you want to choose which product you want to promote. You’ve searched a lot and now you have to choose between two products, that sell both for $100.
The main visible difference is that product A has a 50% commission, and product B only 20%…

Which would YOU promote??

Most people would obviously answer product A… the commission rate is more than double the one product B gives - so why even bother asking?? Because a lot of times the commission rate has nothing to do with how much money you’re going to make… there’s a much more important factor to consider: Conversion Rate (CR).

The CR of a sales letter is a number that says how many visitors become customers. The average standard in offline direct marketing is 1%. On the internet it can easily be much more (a webpage can be far more effective than a paper letter ;)

The conversion rate depends mainly on how well the copywriter did his job. Good copy - high CR, bad copy - low CR.
That’s why copywriting is so important when you’re selling online.

So, let’s make an easy example to see how much difference a better CR can make…

I challenge a friend of mine to see who can make more money online.
We are promoting two products: both product A and B sell for $100.

Product A has a 50% commission and has a visitor/buyer Conversion Rate (CR) of 1%.
Product B instead has a 20% commission but a CR of 7%.

Who would promote A and who B?
Most people (without thinking about conversion rates) would jump on the product A train. 50% against 20%? Who are we kidding? Of course 50% is better, it’s more than twice the commision of B… but is it really that much better?? Let’s do some maths :)

Let’s say my friend spends $10 to send 100 visitors to the sales page of product A. One of them buys (1% CR) so he makes his first $40 of profits (50 minus 10 that he spent in advertising).

I instead spend $10 to send 100 visitors to the sales page of product B, and 7 of them buy (7% CR). With a 20% commission, I just made $130 (140 minus 10 for the ads).

Promoting a product that had less than half the commission of product A I made more than three times what my friend did - his $40 against my $130… and I sent the same number of visitors that he did.

Same effort, triple profits. With a product (B) that had less than half the commision of product A…

So is the commission rate value all that useful to decide what you should promote? Not really … in my non-guru humble opinion!
Commission rates can be incredibly deceptive, so when you make your choices keep it in mind!

Find CB Products That Sell
CBengine is a ClickBank Marketplace product finder and analysis tool. 50% Recurring Affiliate Commission.

First, I would begin with using ClickBank. They have a gazillion affiliate programs to choose from. If you don’t already have a ClickBank account then you can get one for free at http://www.clickbank.com/sell_products.html

We aren’t going to bother making a website or anything like that; I’m going to show you the quickest short-cut to earning the money today.

Now once you’ve signed up with ClickBank we’re going to go to the button “Promote Products”.

Finding your first product to affiliate with I would suggest you go for a topic that you know something about. This will make writing your Google Ad much easier.

Search for a subject that you know a little bit about. I would also recommend choosing a product where you will make at least $20 for the sale.

Of course first, I want to be sure that there is a market for this product, I want to check to see if people are searching for it. So I’m going to head over to overture http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

And place in the keyword of the product I think I would like to promote.

If the keyword is being searched over on Overture a decent amount then I know there is a market for this product.

Now I’m going to see if the salescopy (website) is up to scratch.

Does the header draw you in and make you want to read more? Yes

Does it have believable testimonials? Yes

Is the offer genuine and believable? Yes

Does it have visuals of the product? Yes (not a requirement for myself)

Does it have Free Bonus’s? Yes (also not a requirement for me to promote it but definitely adds value)

Are they offering a money back guarantee? Yes

I would definitely promote this website. So now I need to set up a Google Adwords campaign.

This is now going to be the hardest work of it all. As you can see everything else we’ve done so far is a breeze.

Because this is a digital download (they all are through ClickBank, ClickBank only deals in digital products) and if the subject refers to people worldwide I would promote this globally in my Google Adwords campaign.

Now you need to write your ad that will bring people to want to click on it. Say if I was promoting a product that shows people how to play the guitar… I would test a heading like: Learn to Play Guitar (in this subject line I’ve used the main keyword they’ve probably searched for “guitar” and I’ve suggested what this site will teach you “Learn to Play”.

Next is setting up your keywords. I use either http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ or wordtracker to help me find keywords for this product.

You will want to come up with around 200 to 300 keywords. I generally try to find keywords with little competition, this way I pay less per click.

You ad should be activated in around 10 minutes. You can check this by typing one of your keywords into Google and look for your ad.

2. Bundled Sales
Similar to the above method, except that in this instance, they get to buy your product … at a heavily discount price.

For example, let’s say the customer has to fork out $37 for your product initially.
On the order page, give them an ALTERNATIVE to buy it at $17 instead!

Now this will really intrigue and interest the customer, and he or she will click for more information.

Here’s where you push your affiliate product.
Again, it’s a winning solution for your customer if what you’re promoting is a quality product, and he or she will recognize it as such.

Of course, as mentioned you’ve got to work your sums properly.

3. Backend Sales
Here’s why having your own free or paid product is so important.

You get to promote affiliate programs on the backend effectively.

There are 2 ways to go about this…

=> “Download Page” method
Try not to let prospects download your free product right off the page.

Capture their emails and create a ‘download page’ where they’ll be redirected to for their downloads instead.

Promote relevant affiliate products on this ‘download page’, and through follow-up emails!

It’ll be much more effective if you can negotiate some genuine discounts for them here.

=> “Cloaking” method
Many internet marketers are using this technique successfully.

Cloaked in content and education, your ebook becomes an affiliate marketing machine! It’s where you can actively PRESELL affiliate programs.

Remember that by having downloaded your product in the first place, the prospect has already “opened” his or her mind to you.

You can also enhance your results exponentially by tagging powerful viral marketing features to your products. This can be in the form of resell rights, giveaway rights or rebranding rights!

The formula here entails creation of your own products, and if you truly want to be more successful online, you’ll not go wrong doing this. The truth is, it’s what you NEED to do.
